Twice a year, during the Fashion Weeks, the fashion pros travel to New York, London, Milan, and Paris. The latest trends on the runway are in the center of their attention. But there is also a lot going on beside the catwalks. Of course there are shops, pubs, and hotels in these big cities that are committed to sustainability - and the cool crowd just loves them. We would like to introduce you to our favorites.
Restaurant JoiaStar cuisine with purely vegetarian ingredients in a minimalist ambience in Porta Venezia. Top Ticino chef Pietro Leemann has been delighting his fans from all over Europe for years with his original, artistic creations. All ingredients are organically grown, most of them from local farms. La Vecchia LatteriaSmall, white tiled snack, vegetarian Italian cuisine served - everything is homemade. Lunchtime is quite turbulent. It is best to share mixed plates of cold and warm starters. Also on the menu: Riso, a simple rice dish prepared with broth, without Parmesan cheese (Via dell'Unione, 6).
Un Posto A MilanoIdeal retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city: a former 17th century farmhouse near the Porta Romana, now a center for sustainable food and shopping, environmental awareness and culture. At the heart of the project: "Un Posto a Milano", a mix of bar and restaurant. The ingredients for the dishes are mainly supplied by local farmers, the goods of whom can also be bought at a weekly market (Via Privata Cuccagna, 2, www.unpostoamilano.it).
Hotel Milano ScalaMilan's first zero-emission hotel is located in the middle of the Brera district, just a stone's throw from Via Monte Napoleone and the Duomo - 62 modern and charmingly designed rooms in a historic palazzo. All beauty products in the bathrooms are 99 percent biodegradable. Green oasis: The garden on the 8th floor: fruit, vegetables, and herbs are grown here for the in-house restaurant. B & B Rosso SegnaleAn absolute insider tip: Bed & Breakfast with art gallery and lots of love for details. The center of the city is within walking distance. The furnishings? An original mix of antiques, recycled furniture and flea market finds. Breakfast is served with delicious fresh products from organic farming, and when the weather is good, of course in the garden. Also perfect for relaxing after a long Milano day: the roof terrace. Biggest plus: The house is very welcoming and family-run (double room from approx. 98 €, www.rossosegnale.it).
asapAsap stands for "As Sustainable As Possible". Everything here revolves around sustainable fashion. For the makers of Asap, it is particularly important that all products are manufactured under fair working conditions and in Italy in order to preserve the heritage of craftsmanship and guarantee the shortest supply chain. For fabrics, their main focus is on recycled knitwear and jersey. La Double JDiscreet? Not at all! No way! Anyone who wears one of Jennifer Jane (J. J.) Lane's wildly patterned dresses will get a lot of attention and applause! In her online shop "La DoubleJ", the American fashion journalist, who has lived in Milan for years, sells self-designed, vintage-inspired fashion, accessories and homeware with eye-catching prints.
