We talked to the designer Tanja Hellmuth about her new interior collection.
CAN YOU PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF?I am Tanja Hellmuth, founder and owner of hellmuth.TANJA HELLMUTH STUDIOS a lab for design and creativity. Besides working in my own artistic studio, this is where I develop our ethical ready-to-wear luxury fashion line and, more recently, a new sustainable interior concept.
WHY DO YOU DO WHAT YOU DO?Out of my passion for beautiful things. Above all, I have a great affinity for textile materials. Thus, fashion is obvious, but recently also the creation of textile products for the home.An additional motivation is my conviction that we can all achieve something positive together with and through beautiful, sustainable products.
SINCE WHEN HAVE YOU BEEN DEALING WITH THE TOPIC OF SUSTAINABILITY? Since many, many years... but above all with the question of how we can combine sustainability with a modern, contemporary look.
WAS THERE A TRIGGER FOR THIS?My key experience many years ago were the first horror reports about the abuses in the fashion industry.Since then I have had a strong need to know where a product comes from, under what conditions it was created and what it consists of.
WHAT HAS CHANGED IN YOUR LIFESTYLE SINCE THEN?I consume much more consciously, sometimes I prefer to avoid things in order to treat myself to something good and sustainable of which I know where it comes from and how it was produced and which I will enjoy for a long time. This is true for food as well as for interior design - and of course even more for fashion and accessories. Apart from that, I try to live as "no plastic" as possible and to exploit the possibilities in the energy sector.
DO YOU THINK YOU CAN CONVINCE OTHER PEOPLE TO BUY AND LIVE MORE SUSTAINABLY? I am absolutely convinced that we can motivate many and especially more people to live more sustainably - in the end we MUST! - Meanwhile, there are so many wonderful, modern and beautiful concepts that place great emphasis on sustainability in their implementation.
HOW DID THE IDEA COME ABOUT TO LAUNCH A HOME COLLECTION IN ADDITION TO A FASHION COLLECTION?Actually, this idea has been hidden inside me for a long time. But sometimes it needs a little nudge from the outside... and the lockdown made us all spend more time in our own four walls than we had certainly planned.So why shouldn't we give our home some nice cushions, a new lampshade or a new tablecloth and still consume consciously!?During this particular period, I took up this "slumbering idea" to give our "fabric-left-overs" a new meaningful function in the "zero waste" idea. In addition, we re-staged our own designs on new materials with our sustainably working suppliers and producers.
